And this fact is hindering racial progress.
To make real progress in interracial and inter-group relations by developing in individuals the awareness, knowledge and skills of "Freedom Conductors" — those who facilitate "healing" in themselves and their community, especially in improving equity among groups. The program will also connect Freedom Conductors to a network that facilitates mutual support and on-going engagement in community healing.
Previous conversations on race, whether public or private, have focused only on the contemporary conditions of race relations, for conventional wisdom had long been that "dredging up the past" is counterproductive. But failing to discuss our country's interracial history is problematic in two critical respects - it ignores the reality of the past's influence on the present, and it causes incongruency in the exchanges between persons of different races who have had different histories in America.
