BRIDGES 2009 Special Report on Regional Differences

Published by BRIDGES for a Just Community

It is commonplace in everyday conversation to talk about how Northern Kentucky differs from Ohio, or how the suburbs differ from the central city. Yet until now there has been little data to allow us to see if the opinions so frequently expressed have any basis in real variations in the social climate in different parts of the region.

This report is a modest start to address that question. Last year, BRIDGES for a Just Community published the second edition of its groundbreaking BRIDGES Progress Report on Human Relations in Greater Cincinnati. That report identified the ways in which we have made progress in recent years in inter-group relations in this place that we all call home, and identified some areas where BRIDGES and our partners need to do further work.

This companion report looks specifically at differences in the relationships of social groups between the different sub-regions, which include eight counties in southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and southeast Indiana. What you will see is that the main dividing line is between the City of Cincinnati and the suburbs on both sides of the river, especially in the ways the majority white community views the smaller groups defined by race, religion, ethnicity, and sexual orientation we have studied here.

The report was prepared by Gary Wright of Wright Futures Ltd based on survey data collected by the Institute of Policy Research at the University of Cincinnati.
