Without Sanctuary

Between 1882 and 1968, an estimated 5,000 African-Americans, Latinos, Native Americans and others were victims of lynching throughout the United States. Without Sanctuary: Lynching Photography in America chronicles this domestic terrorism in more than 100 photographs and postcards of lynching incidents taken by bystanders or members of lynch mobs. At a time when hate crimes across America are increasing, Without Sanctuary offers a stark lesson of the consequences of racism, brutality and violence.

The Freedom Center has chosen to show Without Sanctuary because we believe that exploring the experiences --- good and bad --- that have shaped the life- views of generations of people linked by race, ethnic origin or shared memory is a critical first step in achieving mutual empathy and respect. Despite its violent images, or perhaps because of them, Without Sanctuary does just that, in a revealing and ultimately healing way.
