BRIDGES for a Just Community (formerly the National Conference for Community and Justice of Greater Cincinnati) -- the area’s leading human relations organization -- was launched on November 17, 2006 to better serve its mission of achieving inclusion, equity and justice for all. The organization is commonly known as “BRIDGES.”

Forming the new BRIDGES organization assures that all fundraising will be devoted to local human relations programs. Cincinnati NCCJ also collaborated with a majority of other regional NCCJ offices to co-found the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC), Inc. The new NFJC will emphasize sharing best practices among regional members and coordinating advocacy efforts for national impact on issues of diversity and inclusion.

NCCJ of Greater Cincinnati, first known as the National Conference for Christians and Jews Cincinnati region, was established by the Rev. Warren C. Taylor in 1944. The national organization changed its name to the National Conference for Community and Justice in 1998 to better reflect the breadth and depth of its mission, the growing diversity of the country and our need to be more inclusive. In 2005, Cincinnati became an NCCJ affiliate by becoming an independent non-profit organization.

The National Conference for Christians and Jews (NCCJ) was founded in 1927 by Roger Williams Strauss, Jane Addams, Benjamin Cardozo and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes for the Advancement of Justice, Amity and Peace to bring diverse people together to address interfaith divisions, in particular the religious intolerance directed toward Alfred E. Smith, a Catholic and Governor of New York, when he ran for President of the United States Over the almost eighty years since its founding other groups have sough NCCJ’s assistance in gaining inclusion and respect . .

Proud of a distinguished 62-year history with NCCJ, BRIDGES for a Just Community remains true to these ideals today. The BRIDGES name preserves the organization’s legacy to justice and community while using bridges – building bridges – as an updated image for its human relations work.
